Like a storm. The eleven missing from the squad through injury, including the likes of Salah, Alexander-Arnold and Darwin Núñez, are constantly lamented, and there is no thought of this weekend’s Carabao Cup final against Chelsea. Liverpool gave a lesson in football and faith to achieve the return of the champion against Luton Town (4-1).
Jürgen Klopp held nothing back at the level of play and attack. With a leading soul and pure verticality, Liverpool’s first minutes were a flood of football and shots perfectly accompanied by the Anfield melody from the stands. So, it was like a bucket of cold water that, on a separate play and Kelleher’s stop, Ogbene put Luton ahead with a header (12′).
Those are the minutes of the most ‘red’ doubt. The team had a lot of hope in Luis Díaz, who tried both actively and passively. Tackling, combining and finishing, managing the entire Liverpool attack while Gakpo and Elliott seemed to lack their intentions.
Klopp must have said something to his players at half-time, because the second half display was second to none. The players came out with a knife between their teeth and overcame a completely demoralized Luton, unable to stop their defensive leaks and just counting the minutes to concede the first. The fight lasted as long as allowed by Kaminski, who made several worthy saves, and also referee Andrew Madley, who did not signal clear hands in the Osho area.
Giving up is not a game. With so many extraordinary players, a leader had to take responsibility and that was Virgil van Dijk, who imposed his centimeters to achieve the tie with a strategic header (56′). It gave more wings to Liverpool’s explosive play and in a flash, and Luton was caught off guard, Mac Allister crossed with a missile and Gapko put his head in to return (58′).
The offensive current continued. Liverpool are not one to be stingy in their approach and even less if the rival is on the verge of being knocked out. And the final blow was achieved by one who deserved it, Luis Díaz, after a recovery in the rival field and a wonderful maneuver before the end (71′).
Liverpool slowed down after that, and with the double advantage they gained experience and saved energy thinking about Liverpool. Although Luton tried to take advantage of that situation, they couldn’t and Elliott killed them in the fourth (91′). Klopp wants his last Premier.
