The Croatian Ivo Karlovicwinner of eight ATP titles and ranked world number 14 in mid-2008, announced his retirement from professional tennis at the age of 44 on Wednesday.
Via social networks, Karlovic said: “Some of you may have noticed that I haven’t played a tournament for a long time and you always ask me every day if and when I will return to the circuit. I’m sorry to disappoint you, but by with this letter I want to make it official and finally announce my departure”.
“I had a very rewarding, unusual and long career, starting from very humble beginnings, especially for a tennis player. Croatia was a different country in the 80s and 90s when I was growing up, and I am proud of my achievements. and more than I was able to overcome,” added Karlovic, who reached the quarterfinals of Wimbledon in 2009 as the best result in a Grand Slam tournament.
The Croatian, who has been on the ATP Tour for 24 years, says he will stay “close to tennis” and will try to share his “knowledge and all the incredible experiences lived on the circuit with new generations of tennis players.”
