It took place this morning in Chepkorio, Kenya, the Kelvin Kiptum’s funeralthe marathon prodigy who died with his coach on February 11 at the age of 24 after a traffic accident.
The athlete’s farewell began Thursday morning with family and guests gathered at his Colorado County home. Elgeyo-Marakwetwestern Kenya.
After a night of vigil, this morning the procession accompanied the remains of Kiptum to the town of Chepkorio for his funeral.
A mortuary was in charge of carrying the casket to Chepkorio fairgroundwhere family members, athletes and authorities from the Kenyan government and World Athletics gathered.
Among the attendees was the president of World Athletics Sebastian Coethe president of the Kenya Olympic Committee Paul Tergat and the president of the Kenya Athletics Federation Jack Tuwei.
“Kelvin is one of the most unique athletes we’ve produced as a country,” Tergat said, adding, “Our athletes need more support.”
The president of Kenya, William Rutowas also present along with senior government officials to pay tribute to the athlete.
Many Kenyan and foreign athletes attended Kiptum’s funeral, including the Kenyan Olympic champion Faith Kipyegon and the Tanzanian marathon runner Gabriel Gaeywho remembered Kiptum with a few words: “I finished second behind Kiptum in the Valencia marathon. This is a big blow and we are devastated. He was a good friend of mine. We will support his family,” he said.
After noon, Kelvin Kiptum’s body will be moved to the new house built for his family givenwhere he will finally be buried.
