Full control – Gaza Strip: Netanyahu presents a post-war plan

Date:

According to media reports, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has outlined his plans for the Gaza Strip after the war.

As Netanyahu has previously reiterated, the Israeli army aims for full security control over the entire coastal area, The Times of Israel newspaper reported on Friday evening.

Regarding the future governance of the Gaza Strip, the policy document states in vague terms that it would be led by “local officials” with professional experience. These will be people who have no ties to “countries or organizations that support terrorism.”

Contains well-known principles
The Palestinian Authority (PA), which governs the West Bank, is not specifically mentioned in the plan, the report said. However, this does not rule out their participation in the future governance of the Gaza Strip. The plan includes well-known principles that Netanyahu has repeatedly expressed since the war began. However, it was the first time that they were formally presented to the cabinet, the newspaper writes.

The US relies on a renewed PA led by Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and wants it to take back control of the Gaza Strip. Israel rejects this and accuses the autonomous authority of supporting terror.

The US is pursuing a two-state solution
But Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu has so far also rejected calls from some right-wing extremist ministers in his government to repopulate the Gaza Strip. The US, as Israel’s most important ally, is committed to a two-state solution that envisions the peaceful coexistence of Israel and a future Palestinian state. Israel claims comprehensive military control over all Palestinian territories, even in the event of an agreement with the Palestinians. Netanyahu recently clarified that this includes the West Bank and Gaza Strip.
