A Pole (50) attacked a colleague with a knife at his own birthday party in mid-May. He stabs twice, once in the cheek. The jury will decide on attempted murder on Thursday. It does not legally impose an eleven-year prison sentence.
Five of the Polish workers were in Mattsee in May 2021. Due to renovation work. But on May 16, the group of friends had a reason to celebrate: the now defendant’s 50th birthday. The alcohol apparently flowed freely, the defense lawyer said Thursday in the Salzburg court, citing four cases of beer and six bottles of vodka. That’s why the bricklayer and father of two can’t remember anything. Despite an alcohol content of 2.8 promille, he was healthy, prosecutor Jürgen Wiener emphasizes: “He was arrested with blood on his hands.”
The drunken party ended with stab wounds
That evening, around half past nine, the victim had taken a jacket from the car. When he returned to the party, the 50-year-old stood in front of him with an eight-inch knife, Wiener told the jury, “Without saying a word, he stabbed.” First in the stomach, then in the face of his colleague. The prosecutor reports a serious intestinal injury and a puncture in the left cheek and records the testimony that the bricklayer shouted to the victim, “I’ll kill you.”
The defense attorney describes the previously impeccable worker as “calm and good-natured”: “The statements are in stark contrast to his life so far.” The suspect also emphasizes: “I have never wanted anything bad for anyone and have never had any problems with the police.” He has been married for 26 years and has always worked for his family. He also speaks well of his colleagues and the victim. Despite witness statements to the contrary, there was no disagreement over work ethic. And he downplays his obvious alcohol problems.
The jury ruled unanimously of attempted murder. Sentence: Eleven years’ imprisonment, not final.
