An earthquake measuring 5 on the Richter scale has rocked the southeastern Turkish province of Hatay. Two and a half weeks ago, the province was already marked by the devastating double earthquake.
The epicenter of the quake was thus in the Defne district. Initially there were no casualties or damage.
8550 aftershocks since February 6
The 7.7 and 7.6 magnitude earthquakes on Feb. 6 have been followed by 8,550 aftershocks so far, according to Turkey’s Afad disaster agency. Several of them had a strength of more than 6.
More than 49,000 people have been killed in Turkey and Syria, according to official figures. According to the Turkish government, more than 164,000 buildings have been severely damaged or collapsed and are in urgent need of demolition.
