A NASA satellite managed to capture a special snapshot: it recently caught the sun “smiling”. NASA shared the photo on Twitter. The “smiling” center of our solar system immediately captured the imagination of many users.
The image was captured Wednesday evening by NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory satellite, SDO for short. On that day, the satellite “caught the sun smiling,” NASA explained in the tweet, commenting the photo with “Say cheese.”
The dark spots that the sun would give eyes and mouth are called coronal holes and can be seen in ultraviolet light. They are areas where faster solar winds flow into space.
The reactions of Twitter users to the “hot smile” were not long in coming.
Some users were reminded of the Stay-Puft Marshmallow Man from Ghostbusters, others – to match the approaching Halloween – of an oversized pumpkin. There were also animals: some thought they recognized a lion or an otter.
