How do you bend an asteroid on Earth’s orbit? The knee-jerk answer is: nuclear missile! Not good – you just create a cloud of debris, the damage would be multiplied. But how then should one keep the evil of the world away? In his series “Between Heaven and Earth”, scientist and author Christian Mähr has some tips for saving the world.
NASA recently succeeded in doing something unique in human history: the measurable deflection of a celestial body from its orbit. The adjective “measurable” is important because any of us can deduce a celestial body from its orbit. All we have to do is climb on a table and jump down. The impact will nudge the Earth and deflect it from its orbit around the Sun – only no one can measure this change, it is absurdly small. This is due to the size of the Earth.
