Large-scale police operation in Vienna on Tuesday: According to information from “Krone”, a 32-year-old from Lower Austria became intoxicated, drew a gun and fired at police officers. Possible motive: heartbreak.

In the afternoon the alarm bells went off at the police in Vienna-Penzing. An enraged man initially ran armed down Hernstorferstrasse, a .22 caliber pistol strapped to his waistband. Noticing the approaching patrol cars, he fled into one of the houses.

There he would first have called the officials that his girlfriend had cheated on him. The situation then escalated completely: the suspect fired at least three shots at the police officers, the director said.

Hidden behind trash cans
Fortunately, none of the officers were hit. The Serb – his primary residence is in Lower Austria, an address in Vienna’s 14th district is reported as a second home – initially fled and moved into a garage on Felbigergasse. WEGA approached and was able to confront the suspect – he hid behind some garbage cans. In view of the police superiority, the man was eventually arrested without resistance.

The exact background to the fact – according to “Krone” information, the man panicked because of heartbreak – are now being collected by the investigators. It is also important to clarify how the suspect came into possession of the firearm.
