A train was killed in a forest fire in the province of Castellón in eastern Spain on Tuesday. Some passengers panicked at the flames and jumped out of the train. Three passengers suffered severe burns while trying to escape and more than a dozen were injured.
The driver had stopped the train because of the fire in the parish of Caudiel and was about to reverse when some passengers panicked, smashed windows and jumped from the cars. Three people who fled the train suffered severe burns from the flames and more than a dozen passengers suffered minor injuries.
Seriously injured transported to hospitals by helicopter
The train was evacuated and all passengers were taken to safety. The three seriously injured were taken by helicopter to hospitals in Valencia, Spanish media reported. The slightly injured were therefore treated in a field hospital in nearby Jerica. Several roads in Castellon province had to be temporarily closed due to the flames.
Due to months of drought, extreme heat and very dry air, forest fires have broken out in Spain since June. This year is the most devastating forest fire year for the Iberian country since the start of registration.
More than 2,700 square kilometers destroyed
According to measurements from the European Earth observation system Copernicus, hundreds of wildfires have already destroyed more than 2,700 square kilometers since the beginning of the year – that is more than the area of Luxembourg, whose territory is almost 2,600 square kilometers.
