An abrupt end made a train ride for around 200 travelers on the Tyrolean Arlberg route near Landeck on Thursday evening. A Railjet set had come to a halt because the power supply had suddenly disappeared. The fire brigade had to bring the passengers to safety on the rail bed.
According to Florian Stecher, the deputy commander of the Landeck Fire Brigade, damage overhead line had led to the fact that nothing suddenly worked for the train on the Arlberg route. “The Power Line has been broken,” he said in an interview with the “Kroon”. As a result, the train had to be evacuated to bring around 200 travelers to safety.
Passengers took to the streets via the rail bed
The Landeck and Zams fire brigades used rescue platforms to compensate for the height difference between the train and the land. Passengers with limited mobility in particular needed help, says Stecher.
As Stecher describes, the set had come to a halt in a place, from which people could not get on the street immediately. “We accompanied them about 150 meters above the rail bed into a flat point. There we removed the leading rail and brought it to the state roads via an improvised bridge.”
Passengers continued with buses
The passengers then brought buses to the train station in Landeck. “In short, it worked perfectly”, Stecher is satisfied: “The assignment can be terminated after about two hours.”
As the deputy commander describes, this is not the first use of this kind for the Fire Brigade Landeck. “And such scenarios are repeatedly rehearsed.”
The evacuation was completed shortly before 8.30 pm, according to the ÖBB it would take approximately midnight until the Arlberg route was released again.
