Marcella Hill, from the US state, shared an incredible story with her hundreds of thousands of followers on Tiktok: she only found out that she and her husband were related after several years of marriage. And it was just a coincidence: while they were researching baby names and trawling their family tree, the truth came to light… she and her husband, Tage, married her cousin. The marriage is still legal.
“I’ve never said that to anyone in public, but I unwittingly married my cousin,” the blogger and writer explains in a clip she uploaded to TikTok. She reports that she and her husband were on the couch researching baby names when they made the shocking revelation. They browsed her family tree on the familysearch.org website to find a suitable name. “I said, ‘Oh look, grandpa’s name, grandma’s name, great-grandmother’s name, great-great-grandmother’s name.’ My husband sat next to me on his own family search and said, ‘Oh, that’s funny – we have the same names for Grandma and Grandpa,'” says Marcella.
Her grandfather and his grandmother lived together as children
Finally, when they looked at her husband’s family lineage, they found that it is almost identical to theirs. At first Marcella thought her husband had accidentally logged into her account – but then she realized she was actually related to her husband by blood. Her grandpa is his grandma’s cousin – after realizing this, they called their grandparents. Not only do they know each other, but they also lived together when they were young. “We’re third cousins!” reveals Marcella.
Why was the relationship not noticed at the wedding?
“If I go to a family reunion, he can go to his family reunion. At the same time”, the blogger even finds something positive about her situation. But why was the relationship not noticed at the wedding? Marcella and her husband got married at the registry office in a very unspectacular way and just the two of them – without any family. If they had organized a big wedding, they probably would have noticed this detail when drawing up the guest list.
The couple has no problems because of this – the relationship is completely legal. In the US state of Utah, only cousins must meet certain requirements. In Austria it is legal to marry your cousin. However, Justice Minister Alma Zadic announced last year that it would consider not allowing cousins to marry.
