The mother of Kremlin opponent Alexei Navalny, who died in a Russian prison camp, has been given access to her son’s body after days of waiting.
Lyudmila Navalnaya said in a video on Thursday that she had seen her son’s body in the morgue but had not been handed over to it. The 47-year-old died last Friday in the prison camp. Since then, the mother had been searching for the body in the Arctic Circle.
In the video, she again demanded that the body be handed over to her so she could bury him, accusing the power apparatus of secretly trying to take Navalny underground.
‘They imposed conditions on where, when and how I had to bury Alexei. This is against the law,” she said. The investigators threatened to do something with the body if she did not agree to a secret burial. That is why she turned to the audience because relatives, but also supporters, should have the opportunity to say goodbye to Navalny.
Mother said nothing about the cause of death
Navalny’s mother also said she had been informed of the completion of the medical examination, including the cause of death. But she didn’t name them. Navalny’s spokeswoman Kira Yarmysch wrote shortly after the mother’s video was published on the online platform X (formerly Twitter) that medical expertise had determined a natural death. In contrast, Navalny’s wife Yulia, his team and human rights activists accuse Kremlin chief Vladimir Putin of killing the opposition figure, who narrowly survived a poison attack in 2020.
Navalny’s mother said she was alone with investigators and detectives for 24 hours. On Wednesday evening, she was admitted to the morgue in the city of Salekhard in northern Russia. Lyudmila Navalnaya did not comment on the condition of her son’s body.
Russian clerics demand the release of the body
According to Kathpress, hundreds of Russian Orthodox clergy and laypeople have called on the Moscow power apparatus to release the body of Kremlin opponent Alexei Navalny, who died in the prison camp. “We call on you to hand over the body of Alexei Navalny to his family so that his mother, other relatives and like-minded people can say goodbye to him and give him a Christian burial,” the appeal said.
