The US President and UN Secretary General on the anniversary of the war in Ukraine.
US President Joe Biden’s most recent statement is meant to be reassuring, but it also shows just how bad the global security architecture has been – since the start of Putin’s war of aggression against Ukraine exactly one year ago.
While Biden condemned Putin’s suspension of the latest nuclear disarmament deal by Kremlin chief as a “serious mistake,” he added, “But I don’t read that he’s thinking about using nuclear weapons or anything like that.”
Putin, in turn, had a spokesman say that Russia would continue to strictly adhere to the limits set in the treaty. The Kremlin also sees “no increased risk of a nuclear war breaking out”.
Everything can get much worse
Not so Secretary General Guterres at the UN General Assembly in New York on the anniversary of the Russian invasion. His pessimistic balance: “In the past year we have not only seen the suffering and devastation increase, it is becoming increasingly clear how much worse it can get.”
The possible consequences of a conflict spiral are a clear and present danger: “By now we have heard implicit threats about the use of nuclear weapons.” That is “absolutely unacceptable”.
