A spacewalk by two Russian cosmonauts had to be canceled Thursday due to a coolant leak from a Russian “Soyuz” capsule docked to the International Space Station (ISS). The leak (see video above) may have been caused by a micrometeorite impact.
Before the escape hatch was opened, a warning signal went off for an initially unknown reason, the Russian space agency Roskosmos announced on Thursday morning. Their American counterpart, NASA, spoke on Twitter about a coolant leak on the Russian “Soyuz” capsule – but at the same time gave it all-clear.
ISS excursion has been cancelled
“Today’s spacewalk with cosmonauts Sergei Prokopyev and Dmitry Petelin is canceled because the control center must first assess the impact of a coolant leak on the Soyuz MS-22 spacecraft (see image in tweet above). The space station is in good health and the crew of Expedition 68 is safe,” said NASA.
Prokopyev and Petelin should have left the outer poster of humanity in space in the early hours of the morning to work on the outside of the ISS. Roskosmos immediately announced an investigation into the incident.
Cooperation despite the war in Ukraine
Despite the war in Ukraine, NASA and Roskosmos will continue to work together for the time being. Prokopyev and Petelin flew to the ISS in September with NASA astronaut Frank Rubio in the Soyuz capsule.
In addition to them, American astronaut Nicole Aunapu Mann, her colleague Josh Cassada, Japanese astronaut Koichi Wakata and cosmonaut Anna Kikina are currently aboard the space station about 400 kilometers above Earth.
