No more access! – Vienna must close the fan zone on Rathausplatz!

Date:

Just an hour before the kick-off of the round of 16 for our ÖFB kickers, the city of Vienna has to close the fan zone on Rathausplatz. “We are bursting at the seams, there is no more access,” a statement reads.

14,500 fans had already gathered in front of Vienna’s city hall on Tuesday evening to watch the historic round of 16 match between Austria and Turkey at the venue where the film festival is currently taking place.

“Please don’t drive away anymore”
But whoever leaves now is too late. “The entrances are closed, please do not drive away. Thank you for your great interest and understanding!”, the city of Vienna said on its social media channels.

The police have prepared themselves
The police had already prepared for the match in advance and had increased security measures for the public. “The Vienna police will do everything in their power to prevent criminal acts in the best case,” police spokesman Mattias Schuster stressed on Tuesday.

In addition, police officers will be deployed outside the relevant locations to be able to respond quickly to any football-related celebrations or gatherings of fan groups.

Sufficient officials are assured, especially at the four public viewing locations, the Rathausplatz, the central station, the Prater and Prater/Admiral. “We will be deployed more and more, of course with uniformed forces, but also with civilian forces,” Schuster said.
