The Karlau prison in Graz houses many serious criminals. The East Styrian Gerhard Derler has recently become the new head of the institution. In an interview he talks about the radical renovations during ongoing operations, extremism and a formative hostage situation.
“crown”: Mr. Derler, you took over the management of the prison at a difficult time. After breakout attempts – prisoners dug a hole in the prison wall twice – a major renovation is underway.
Gerard says: Since last year, the cell house has been renovated during full operation, a special challenge. On the one hand the building must work, on the other hand it must be safe. But I’m glad we got approval for the general renovation. After all, we are talking about a cost of 35 million euros. And we all know how hard it is to get money for the prison system.
