After twelve climbs and nine cobbled sections where none of the escapees made it, Tratnik and Politt managed to open a gap in the last ten kilometers.
The 34-year-old Slovenian followed the German in the last hundred meters and took advantage of his breakdown to take a victory, which he described as the biggest of his career.
Additionally, with a time of 4:31.27, Visma-Lease placed two other runners in the top five, Belgian Wout Van Aert and Frenchman Christophe Laporte, third and fifth, respectively.
The team’s work had already canceled the first breakaway of a group of 30 runners and put van Aert, Laporte and the American Matteo Jorgenson in the lead, who was hit on the Bosberg, the final climb of the route.
The French Julian Alaphilippe (Soudal-Quick Step), double world champion, suffered two falls that left him with no choice, the first less than a hundred kilometers and the second on a curve at 25, with his teammate Dane Kasper Asgreen and the Dane Florian Sénéchal (Arkea-Samsic), who injured his collarbone.
