Domenico Berardi suffered on Sunday a “complete rupture” of the Achilles tendon, as confirmed this Monday by Sassuolo, and will be absent from the Italian team in the next Euro Cup, where they will take part in a group with Spain, Croatia and Albania.
“The instrumental tests carried out on Domenico Berardi showed a complete damage to the Achilles tendon in his right leg,” Sassuolo reported on Monday. Tomorrow, Tuesday, the 29-year-old left winger will undergo surgery in Bologna.
His move to the future, in the air
Berardi, a differential player for ‘neroverdi’ that every summer he sounds for a big team in Italy, fully qualified to compete in European competitions, a regular in the ‘azzurra’ calls and several times a starter with the current coach, Luciano Spalletti, had to be replaced on Sunday during the match lost against Hellas Verona (1-0). He was the first to play after a month and a half vacation.
He was injured alone, when he started after stealing the ball in the three-quarter zone after a terrible start from Verona. When he put his right foot on it, he fell to the ground. Tears filled his face as he was helped off the field, unable to do it alone.
His vacation, which will last between 10 and 12 months, leaving Sassuolo badly affected, penultimate and in the relegation zone, and it represents a change of plans for Spalletti, who has to include an unexpected winger in the list of elite players who will travel to Germany to defend the European Championship won in 2021.
In addition, it compromises a hypothetical departure of the player from Sassuolo in the summer, so he could stay in Serie B in the event of relegation of the ‘neroverdi’.
