He Paris City Hall is being registered this tuesday a trip made by the mayor, Anne Hidalgo, to Tahiti and New Caledonia between October 16 and November 5, 2023, where suspicions of misuse of public funds weigh in.
The trip, whose budget reached 59,500 euros, has been the subject of a preliminary investigation since last November, when the National Financial Prosecutor’s Office (PNF) became aware of alleged irregularities following a complaint filed by the association ‘AC !! Anticorruption’ and “several complaints from public officials of the Paris City Council and its Paris region,” reported Le Monde newspaper.
“Either the trip is official, and therefore must be paid for by the Paris City Council, or it is private and must be paid personally” the mayor, the association said in its complaint.
The trip to Polynesia was officially registered, according to Le Monde, to “deepen cultural relations with these foreign territories” on the eve of this year’s Olympic Games, which will be held in Paris.
Initially, Hidalgo wanted to visit Teahupoo (Tahiti), a benchmark for its surfing environment and where surfing events will be hosted during the Games, but this was not done because of “local tensions. “
The trip’s controversy worsened when his visit was extended by fifteen days for a private vacation on one of the islands with his family.
Hidalgo’s entourage confirmed to the French newspaper Le Parisien last November that all tickets are paid for by the councilbefore announcing that the mayor paid his “out of his own pocket, before the delegation left.”
Apparently, among the staff with Hidalgo, two of the members decided to extend their stay for two days on a private basis, but in this case the tickets were paid for by the City Council.
“The public part of Ms. Anne Hidalgo’s journey, in her capacity as Mayor of Paris, (…) is directly related to the interests of the City of Paris, both for its purpose and for the meetings with the various another authority” , declared the Deontology Commission of the City Council on November 10.
In a statement published on Tuesday, the City Council of the French capital reported that it had presented “justifying documents” and that the mayor was “calm and confident in the results of these investigations and makes the himself to the judicial authorities to clarify the truth.”
