The age limit for former British Open champions has been lowered again from 60 to 55 years starting with this year’s edition, at Royal Troon (Scotland), the Royal & Ancient (R&A) announced this Wednesday. The age limit was earlier lowered from 65 to 60 years in 2007.
“From 2024, players who have won The Open will be exempt until age 55. All golfers who are currently exempt as past champions will be able to play in The Open until age 60,” the R&A said in a statement.
“A new exemption will offer players competing on the Asian Tour, Japan Golf Tour, Australasian PGA Tour and Sunshine Tour the opportunity to qualify on the International Federation Ranking list. The top five golfers on the date of registration will earn a place at The Open,” the note said.
The R&A also announced that New Zealander Michael Hendry has been granted a medical exemption after he was unable to participate last year following his leukemia diagnosis, which forced him to go without food for several months.
