Daniil Medvedev has expressed his excitement at the idea of competing in the Paris Olympic Games and he will follow the rules as a neutral athlete, after the sport’s governing body announced on Wednesday its stance on players from Russia and Belarus.
The International Tennis Federation (ITF) said players from both countries can participate in the Paris Games as neutral, no flags, emblems or songs. Russians and Belarusians were banned from competing worldwide following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022, with Belarus used as a staging ground.
In March last year, however, the IOC issued a series of recommendations for international sports federations to allow competitors from these countries to return.
Ahead of his Indian Wells debut on Friday, Russian Medvedev said he was looking forward to playing in the Olympics. after a positive experience in Tokyo three years ago, when he reached the quarterfinals of the individual competition.
“If I can, I’ll be there. I will play singles and doubles“Medvedev told the press.
“With the neutral flag, I will follow the rules. If it is under the neutral flag, I will play under the neutral flag and I will try to compete there, show good tennis and try to win, for sure.”
