A 38-year-old woman from Mühlviertel was sentenced to 15 months’ partial imprisonment for murder by gross negligence by the Linz Regional Court on Thursday. She was walking with three American Staffordshire terriers in Naarn when they jumped and killed a jogger (60). During the trial, the suspect accepted responsibility for the tragedy for the first time.
The bloody drama in Naarn made headlines throughout Austria: on October 3, the jogger Herta A. (60) – she was a neighbor – was attacked and literally torn apart by the three Amstaff terriers. The dog owner obviously could not prevent the accident, but for a long time he did not accept any guilt.
The man could only identify the victim by his clothing
Her husband initially did not notice the incident, but became concerned because she could not be reached by phone. He asked his boss if he could go home because he was afraid something had happened to his wife. The sad certainty followed: the man could identify his wife only by her clothing.
Discussion about fighting and cunning dogs
As a result, a major discussion arose about so-called fighting and list dogs. Of the approximately 82,000 four-legged friends in Upper Austria, more than 1,100 are American Staffordshire, or ‘Amstaff’ for short.
The trial at the Linz Regional Court was over after half an hour. The sentence: 15 months in prison, five of which are unconditional. The verdict is already legally binding.
