Driver seriously injured – tractor over slope: obstacle that saved the barn

Date:

Terrible accident Thursday morning in the Tyrolean lowlands: on the Großvolderberg (Innsbruck-Land district) a local man drove his tractor off the road and fell about 150 meters over steep terrain. A shed prevented another fall. The driver suffered serious injuries.

The 76-year-old farmer drove his tractor uphill on Großvolderbergstrasse shortly before 10 a.m. on Thursday. In the area of Ausseregg, the local man left the road for reasons that are still unclear. The tractor ended up on the steeply sloping meadow, which was still lightly snow-covered, and the driver apparently could barely keep it under control.

However, the driver managed to keep the tractor on its wheels, but the vehicle was in danger of falling into trees or into the valley.

Crashed into sheds after 150 meters
Whether it was done deliberately by the driver or purely by chance: the tractor drove about 150 meters across the meadow directly towards a barn. “The vehicle pushed through the sliding door, which probably caused it to slow down a bit and come to a stop in the shed,” said Andreas Schmid, chief of the Großvolderberg fire brigade. Equipment stored in the shed eventually caught the tractor.

“We prepared the landing site for the emergency helicopter and helped rescue the injured person,” says Andreas Schmid. The farmer was flown to the clinic in Innsbruck.

About 30 Florianis from Großvolderberg, Volders and Wattens, rescue services, police and helicopters were present. The fire brigade continued to clean up for a few hours.
