They built the world’s first stadium just for women’s football: “Hopefully in Europe…”

Date:

He Current Kansas City, one of 14 franchises in the American women’s soccer league, is inaugurating its own stadium this Saturday against Portland (6:00 pm). The stadium CPKC, with 11,500 seats and located on the banks of the Missouri, thus becoming the first venue in the world built to host only women’s soccer. 107 million euros were invested in it.

This Saturday, the christening of the stadium in the game against the Thorns will end a year and a half of incredible work. And, above all, it will give the building a unique status: the first stadium built to host women’s football. “It’s crazy,” enthused Claire Lavogez, a former French international who arrived at the club in the summer of 2022. We have our names in the locker room, this is really our stadium. On the Sporting field (the boys’ field), we always feel different. it’s ours!”.”

“The club has a great image here,” NWSL journalist Shawn Meadow confirmed to SportBusiness. “The local population is pleased and follows the team very actively because they are convinced of all these investments.” Aided by the sports appeal of a mid-sized Midwestern city, last year it was the fifth team whose games drew the largest crowds. Each gained an average of 11,300 followers, 4,000 more than in 2022.

All 13 regular-season home games are sold out. A madness that surprised Lavogez. “In France we hardly have twenty or thirty fans… Here there is a big difference in the treatment of the clubs as well as the population and the media. Here we have slow motion, the VAR, we are far from the camera unique of the D1 Arkema . I hope one day, in Europe, we can fulfill what is being done here.”
