Wyndham Clark, solid lead in The Players

Date:

Wyndham Clark leads The Players Championship with authority after signing a card of 65 strokes on Friday, -7 for a total of -14, and put themselves four strokes ahead of their chasers.

Clark, the reigning US Open champion, will arrive this weekend with a big advantage over Xander Schauffele and the Canadian Nick Taylortied for second place at 10 under par.

The American started his round on the back nine and had a birdie and a bogey in seven holes. He gained some momentum by holing an 18-foot birdie putt on the island green of the famous par-3 17. He turned and holed the birdie.

England’s Matt Fitzpatrick (69) tied for fourth on the 9th under with Maverick McNealy (68). World number 1 Scottie Scheffler shot a 69 and tied for sixth at 8 under par with Tom Hoge (69), German Matti Schmid (68) and Canadian Corey Conners (68).

Scheffler, the defending Players titleholder and last week’s winner of the Arnold Palmer Invitational, felt a pinch in his neck early in his Friday round that turned into pain. He received treatment in the middle of his cycle.

Northern Ireland’s Rory McIlroy, who shared the first-round lead with Clark and Schauffele, was eight shots worse Friday, with four bogeys and a double, and a 73. He is tied for 15th at 6 under.

Justin Thomas (1 over) and Jordan Spieth (2 over) are among the big names who won’t make the cut.
