Scottie Scheffler was, this past morning and after signing a final card of 64 strokes (8 under par), in the first player in the 50-year history of The Players Championship to retain the title at TPC Sawgrass.
Scheffler He finished the week with a 20 under par and 268 stroke total to achieve his second straight victory in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida.
“It’s pretty special,” Scheffler said, the first golfer to win The Players twice since Tiger Woods (2001, 2013).
“It’s not something you get the chance to do very often. It’s hard enough to win one, so to repeat the title is very special.”
He No. 1 in the worldwho battled nagging neck pain early in the tournament, He started the day five shots behind the leader after the first 54 holes, Xander Schauffele.
Afterrack up an eagle and six birdies to reach 20 under par, saw Brian Harman, Wyndham Clark and Schauffele fail to make another birdie to force a playoff.
Harman (68 on Sunday), Clark (69) and Schauffele (70) tied for second place at 19 under par. Englishman Matt Fitzpatrick (69) finished fifth at 16 under par.
Scheffler was in contention earlier in the week after opening with a 5-under 67. His neck problems surfaced on Friday, when he felt a pinch while swinging and requires mid-cycle treatment.
“I played good golf Thursday,” Scheffler said. “I made an early birdie, I think I was between 2 under and four on Friday, so I was in the thick of the tournament.
“Suddenly I have that pinch in my neck, but I managed to stay in the tournament. It was the same on Saturday. I’ve said it before when you’ve suffered a major injury like, “If you wake up the next day feeling a little better or exactly the same, it’s a win.”
Scheffler also won for the second week in a row, achieving second race Arnold Palmer Invitational title last week in Orlando. In addition, he has finished six tournaments in the top 10 in the seven he has participated in this season.
“I think mentally it can be very tiring,” Scheffler said. “Physically, it’s also tiring, but mentally it is very happy to be among the latter groupsbut it also affects your body and mind.
“So, yeah, definitely There’s a big mental aspect to that.. But that’s the most fun. “I think the most fun you can have on a golf course is in an argument.”
Scheffler He began his final round by holing out for an eagle 2 on the fourth. His wedge shot to the green bounced three times, spun a bit sideways and landed in the hole.
After a pair of birdies from 18 feet and 16 feet, he made four more birdies from 8 to 12 to move himself up the leaderboard while Schauffele and company are trying to keep up.
Clark, looking for another big trophy to add to his growing collection (the US Open, the Pebble Beach Pro-Am and more), He birdied Nos. 16 and 17 to get closer.
But his birdie attempt from 17 feet away on the 18th hole refused to go in.
“I don’t know how that putt didn’t go in,” Clark said. “His speed and I thought he was going in (entering) to the left, and even though he slid, I thought he was going in. “I’m quite devastated because he didn’t come in.”.
