Markel Zubizarreta: “We will try to live up to it”

Date:

Markel Zubizarreta, director of women’s football of the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), reviewed the draw for the women’s football tournament at the Paris Olympic Games, which paired Spain in Group C with Brazil, Japan and an African rival, the winner of the duel between of Nigeria. and South Africa, and assured that they will try to “live up to it.”

“Our expectations are to know that at any final stage and more in the context of the Olympic Games, all teams are difficult. We will have a chance to take revenge against Japan; Brazil is a very strong team and we still have to find out what the match between Nigeria and South Africa will bring,” he said in statements released by the RFEF.

“We will try to fulfill the challenge and adapt as much as possible to this very special competition,” he added.

The world champions, seeded in group C, will play their first match in Nantes on July 25 against Japan at 5pm local time.

The Asian team will not be an easy opponent for Montse Tomé’s team, recent winners of the Nations League but debutants in an Olympic tournament.

Futoshi Ikeda’s team, silver at London 2012, will be competing in their sixth Games, after defeating North Korea in the match for third place in the Asian qualifying tournament.

The Spanish team’s second match is on July 28, also in Nantes, at 7 pm, against the winner of the match between Nigeria and South Africa on April 9.

Spain will close their participation in the group stage on July 31 in Bordeaux against Brazil, silver in Athens 2004 and Beijing 2008, celebrating their eighth participation after winning the women’s Copa América in 2022.
