Fernando Alonso He ended the Australian GP race by going to the marshals. The Asturian finished in sixth place after withstanding the attacks of George Russell, who suffered a serious accident with one lap remaining. At first it seemed the Spaniard had nothing to do, but Mercedes complained that Alonso braked earlier than he should have, causing the Briton to make a mistake.
“Of course. Of course, I knew that Russell and I were getting closer… he was in the DRS distance for five or six laps, so yes, he was very close and, as I said, I was just doing qualifying laps and trying to maximize the speed.Alonso explained for SkySports.
As for the rest of the race, the Asturian ended up enjoying an improvement with respect to grid position (10th). The strategy of going out with the hard guys and outlasting the rest of the first stint worked perfectly.
“It logically benefited us. It appeared in one of the laps that suited us and we were lucky enough to make up some positions. It wasn’t the best Grand Prix in terms of performance but it was a good weekend in terms of strategy, pit-stops… we did everything well in the race. So happy,” he commented on the DAZN microphones.

To gain a few seconds in his battle away from Russell, when Pérez passed Fernando, the Spaniard stuck in his wake and took tenth with DRS. A strategy that was key to keeping the Mercedes driver at the end of the race.
“I saw that I was a bit faster and I could stay away from the DRS. I went to the pace of Sergio (Pérez), who is older than me and benefited from it. We tried to play a little bit”
