Controversy over the number of substitutions in Saturday’s clash between Euskal Selekzioa and Uruguay in San Mamés began before the ball started rolling. The agreement signed between the two federations for the match, Basque assured, is open to making substitutions as each coach deems appropriate. However, Bielsa insisted before the match started that FIFA regulations had to be applied or, in other words, only five substitutions could be made.
Jagoba Arrasate opted to make six changes at half-time, including the goalkeeper. Bielsa showed his disagreement and De Burgos Bengoetxea, the referee, chose not to start the second half until the matter was clarified. The man from Rosario has agreed to start half a dozen substitutions with the local side as one is for the goalkeeper.
Then, when Djaló and Aritz came together, the movement that was seen in the bench area arose. Bielsa ended up signing his consent to make three more changes to the Euskal Selekzioa, but then he didn’t offer a press conference. Al Loco, apparently, also did not take Arrasate’s list seriously, understanding that it did not include the best Basque players who were likely to be called up.
