The Miami Open 2024 is now starting to look into its final rounds. This Monday the round of 16 will be completed after the first days marked by rain… and surprises.
Players of the stature of Rublev, Rune, Tsitsipas and Fritz are out of the tournament. The first of them was Andrey Rublev, who fell on Friday in doubles 6-4 against Czech Tomas Macchac, 60th in the ranking.
But the escabechina arrived this Saturday, on a stormy day marked by rain which forced the game program to be delayed and caused some games to be finished in the early hours of the morning, and others to be postponed until Sunday.
The earliest to rise when it was time to say goodbye was Tommy Paul (13)who retired due to injury after losing the first set (6-4) against Martin Damm, and Taylor Fritz (12), who lost in his debut to Brazilian Thiago Seyboth Wild (n.76).
Argentine Tomas Etcheverry (n.30) was also removedwho fell to Andy Murray (n.62), while Sebastián Báez (n.19) succumbed to Dominik Koepfer (6-3 and 6-2).
For Sunday there was a resounding defeat of Holger Rune, who was swept by Fabian Marozsan (6-1, 6-1) in a fight to forget showing that the Dane cannot find the point in a way that allows him to catch up with Carlos Alcaraz or Jannik Sinner.
The Spanish and Italians are doing their best and are still in the competition. Sinner is in the round of 16 after his victory this Sunday against Tallon Griekspoorwhile Alcaraz will look for his pass this Monday (00:00h) against Gael Monfils.
The Indian Wells champion was the last Spanish representative at the Miami Open after that the eliminations of his compatriots Alejandro Davidovich (28) and Martín Landaluce (360).
American Ben Shelton (no. 17) defeated LandaluceOnly 18 years old, in the second round 6-3 and 6-4, in one hour and 15 minutes
Despite the loss, Landaluce, who received an invitation from Miami, closed a very special week at the Florida tournament, where on Thursday he achieved his first victory on the ATP circuit, defeating fellow Spaniard Jaume Munar .
In its part, Davidovich said goodbye this Sunday after losing in the third round to Norwegian Casper Ruud (n.8) by 6-3 and 6-4 in one hour and 36 minutes.
Ruud, a finalist in Miami in 2022 (he lost for the title against Alcaraz), was Jarry’s next rival, beating Thiago Seyboth Wild 6-7(1), 7-5 and 6-3 in a sharp that third-round clash of two hours and 59 minutes was experienced with great passion in the stands among Chilean and Brazilian fans.
For its part, Chile has had reasons for smiles but also for regrets ever since Nicolás Jarry (n.23) went to the second round after a marathon against the Brazilian Thiago Seyboth Wild (n.76) while Alejandro Tabilo (n.44) did not defeat the Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov (n.12).
The other Chileans in the competition, Tabilo fought in his second round match but ultimately lost to Dimitrov by 6-7(5), 7-6(5) and 6-2 in two hours and 26 minutes.
