Corruption is a scourge that affects all countries in the world. While in Spain the former president of the Royal Spanish Football Federation is being investigated for alleged corruption charges, the Asian giant condemned the former president of the Chinese Athletics Association, Yu Hongchenup to 13 years in prison for accepting bribes.
The Intermediate People’s Court of Huangshi, in Hubei province (center), dropped the sentence on Tuesday after considering that the former head of Chinese athletics, a position he held from 2022 to the end of 2023, received illegal payments worth more than 22.54 million yuan (2.8 million euros).
According to the sentence, these crimes were committed between 2010 and 2023, when Yu Hongchen held various important positions in Chinese sports, from athletics management to the vice president of Chinese Football Association (CFA) or the presidency of Super League (CSL).
The judicial order also deemed it proven that Yu took advantage of his positions to provide assistance in matters such as business operations, favoring soccer clubs in relegation, arbitration sanctions or player transfers, among others yet.
The court noted that Yu’s actions “seriously harmed the order of fair competition and the sports ecosystem” and caused “significant damage” to the sports and football industry.
The sentence states that Yu Hongchen confessed to most of the crimes and part of the embezzled money was recovered, leading to a lesser sentence.
This Tuesday, the same court sentenced life imprisonment to the former president of the CFA between 2019 and 2023, Chen Xuyuanfor accepting bribes worth more than 81 million yuan (10.3 million euros) over 13 years.
After coming to power in 2012, the current general secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and president of the country, Xi Jinping, began an anti-corruption campaign in which several high-ranking Chinese officials were convicted of accepting millions dollar bribe. .
