Berrettini calmed Munar’s reaction in Marrakech

The Italian Matteo Berrettini reached for the first time in 2024 the quarter finals of a tournament, in Marrakeshafter quieting the Spanish reaction Jaume Munar, 6-4, 4-6 and 6-3and seal the victory in two hours and twenty-two minutes.

The Roman tennis player, former number six in the world, with seven titles in his backpack although the last ones in 2022, ran into a rival who did not give up and exited in the second set, when he seemed certain to lose on the fast track.

A break in the first set gave the former Wimbledon finalist the lead in 2021. He also broke early in the second to go up 3-1, but the Spaniard reacted at an unexpected moment. Berrettini led 3-1 and 40-0 in the second set. Munar won thirteen points in a row and ended up winning the set and tying the match.

The Spanish tennis player extended the wrist until the middle of the final round. But at 3-3 he lost on his serve. The Italian rallied and closed the match after a final acceleration that gave him a final 4-0 partial.

Berrettini will face his compatriot in the quarterfinals Lorenzo Sonegofourth seed, who bounced back from his match against Indian Sumit Nagal by 1-6, 6-3 and 6-4.

The Russian also reserved a place in the top eight of the tournament Pavel Kotov, who defeated Italian Flavio Cobolli, eighth seed, 6-1 and 7-6 (5). The Russian will face the winner of the clash between the first seed, the Serbian Laslo Djere, and the transalpine Fabio Fognini, from the previous stage.
