Fernando Alonso isn’t too optimistic about major grid changes this weekend. He Aston Martin has related improvements to AMR24 for the Japan event but the Asturian doesn’t believe they are good enough to compete where they are now.
The Asturian was unable to use these new pieces in Friday’s free practice as there was only one complete kit and it was used by his teammate Lance Stroll. However, the Spaniard managed to finish seventh, half a second off Verstappen’s best time.
“Today doesn’t really count. We shouldn’t be in a different position compared to Australia, so I think we will continue with the fourth or fifth fastest team. “We will see if we can optimize everything for tomorrow, but Sunday will be a difficult race for everyone.”
The second free practice session didn’t have any kind of story as it was wet. In fact, Alonso was one of seven drivers who did not come out for a ride at least once within 60 minutes of training.
“We don’t have much to say. Suzuka is good, it’s nice to ride, we can’t say anything more. It’s a shame for the fans, they came to the circuit to cheer us on and we don’t have tires to ride on, I feel sorry for them”
