Disaster relief – income too high: storm victims leave empty-handed

Date:

After heavy storms caused enormous damage, some Carinthians did not receive financial help due to the income ceiling. The arrangement has been changed – for future emergencies. However, the FPÖ demands retroactive payment.

The estate of an Arriach farmer was hit by heavy storms in 2022. The damage is still visible today. “We have brought the paths and the forests themselves back into shape. But the roofs are still damaged,” says the farmer desperately.

Application rejected
Like many others affected, his family has also asked for support. “With the help of the municipality of Arriach, I applied for disaster aid from the emergency aid organization, but it was rejected because of my family income,” he says disappointedly.

In 2022, you were only entitled to disaster relief if you did not exceed the net annual income limit of 67,000 euros. This year the farmer tried his luck again. Because in January, responsible State Councilor Daniel Fellner called for income to no longer be taken into account in disaster relief. But even then the Arriacher came away empty-handed. “Family income was valid through December 31, 2023. Payments will not be made retroactively,” Fellner’s office said.

The FPÖ with Erwin Angerer wants those affected from previous years to also have the right to retroactive effect. “Several people from the area have contacted us and they have not received any compensation. At the time, we demanded that storm victims receive support regardless of their income. Those affected in 2022 and 2023 must also be supported!”, said the club chairman.
