Wrexham could get another ‘made in Hollywood’ promotion today

Date:

Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney Two Hollywood actors bought Wrexham AFC in February 2021 for $2.5 million and have since put this modest Welsh club on the football map. Now, like a movie script, he is about to finish his second promotion in a row.

When Reynolds and McElhenney arrived, Wrexham was in the fifth tier of football. A year ago it rose to Division Two and this Saturday it could go up to Division One, as the Fourth Division is known in England.

Five points in three days

Wrexham are second in the standings with 79 points, four behind leaders Stockport (83), and needing five points from their three remaining games to return to League One for the first time since the 2004-05 season. But now it has its first chance to achieve what would be its second straight promotion in its 159-year history and write another Hollywood movie ending.

For this Wrexham Need to beat last-placed Forest Green Rovers at their home stadium, the Racecourse Ground and will hope that MK Dons, fourth with 74 points and awaiting third-placed Mansfield Town (76), and Barrow (67), sixth but with two games less played, do not win when they visit Gillingham (13th). In this way one of the three direct promotion places is guaranteed. Four teams, from fourth to seventh, will compete for the final playoff spot.

‘Just’ two steps from Premier

In other words, Wrexham is about to enter another exciting chapter in its recent history, an act by Reynolds and Rob McElhenney they only dreamed of being able to interpret. If they move up to Division One, they are ‘just’ two promotions away from reaching the prestigious Premier League.

“Our aim is to focus on the game and what we have to do,” said the Wrexham coach. Phil Parkinson on the BBC. “We cannot control anything from the outside and our fate is ultimately in our own hands.”

Now, first win and wait

“We are preparing to play as well as we can this Saturday and see if it is enough to get points against Forest Green, who are obviously fighting for their lives,” Parkinson stressed. “We’re going to go out and win the game and see what happens at the end. Whatever happens in other areas, we have to go out and get the three points.”

The first climb has a record of 111 points

Wrexham starred in a fairy tale last season in its return to the English Football League (EFL), an organization that includes three categories below the Premier League, by adding 111 points in the National League, an absolute record in English football in a championship with 46 games.

A success that has earned worldwide praise thanks in the documentary ‘Welcome to Wrexham’, which chronicles the club’s unstoppable rise since Reynolds and McElhenney bought it.

During the victory achieved on Tuesday by Wrexham against Crawley Town (4-1), Reynolds posted a photo of himself on social media watching the game on a giant screen as he records his latest movie on a movie set.
