Samuel Eto’o has accused the general secretary of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) of several violations of FIFA’s code of ethics during an investigation into allegations that he was involved in match-fixing. According to ‘The Guardian’, Eto’o’s lawyers filed a complaint with world football’s governing body claiming that Véron Mosengo-Omba opened the investigation to create “negative publicity” about the former FC Barcelona striker, who has been president of the Cameroon Football Federation (Fecafoot) since December 2021.
In August, CAF opened an investigation saying it had received “written statements from various Cameroonian football stakeholders to investigate some alleged inappropriate behavior by Mr. Samuel That’s it.” There was talk of match-fixing after a recording of Eto’o talking to an alleged president of a Cameroonian club was made public.
Eto’o’s lawyers insisted the recording did not provide evidence of match-fixing and questioned its legality. They said their complaint to FIFA alleged that Mosengo-Omba was instrumental in starting a media campaign against Eto’o and accused him of breaching various parts of FIFA’s code of ethics, including defamation, an “attack on physical and moral integrity” and abuse of power, as well as a violation of the general rules of conduct and the duty of confidentiality.
“We have identified some of the people who contributed to this situation, especially the general secretary,” said Eto’o’s lawyer Antoine Vey. “He is the one we mentioned in our complaint. We have questions about who recorded that tape and for what purpose. destroy Eto’o’s reputation.”
