The Chilean Cristian Garín overcame American Alex Michelsen to rival the early favorite, German Alexander Zverevin the Munich tournament, where the current champion, the Danish Holger Rune, also advanced, eliminating the Colombian Daniel Elhali Galán.
Garín beat Michelsen 6-7(7), 6-2 and 6-1, for two and a half hours, in the first meeting between the two. The South American, a semi-finalist in Estoril last week, will face local idol Zverev, who has won this event twice.
Rune, for his part, defeated Elhali Galán with authority 6-4 and 6-2. The reigning champion, a finalist in Brisbane this 2024, still without a victory, will play the winner of the clash between German Yannick Hanfmann and Swiss Andrea Huesler.
Besides, the Spanish Álex Moro was defeated by the American Taylor Fritz, third seed, in the round of 16 in a tournament that had to be postponed Wednesday because of rain.
Fritz is the favorite against the Spanish tennis player, whom he defeated 6-3 and 6-1, in one hour and fifteen minutes, and will face British Jack Draper, sixth seed, in the quarterfinals.
