Alarm on the Italian highway A23 near the Austrian border: An 88-year-old wrong-way driver drove his car into the opposite lane and drove eight kilometers in the wrong direction. He also passed through two tunnels before police could block traffic and stop the vehicle.
As video surveillance footage shows, after accidentally taking the wrong exit in Ugovizza, the pensioner unknowingly drove against the direction of traffic, all the way to the Tarvisio tunnel.
Heavy fine and driver’s license revoked
The man was fined 8,186 euros and his driver’s license was revoked, as well as his vehicle for three months.
The incident happened on April 12, but was only announced by the police on Thursday.
Almost hit other vehicles
Several motorists reported that the car was traveling in the wrong direction in the fast lane of the highway and almost hit other vehicles. Traffic was immediately blocked at the state border with Austria, while a police patrol stopped the vehicle.
