Sheffield United needed a miracle to remain a Premier League team and failed to win even the first of the tests after losing a return against Newcastle at St James’ Park (3-1).
Well, Chris Wilder’s team tried, but not enough to be in the top category as evidenced by the 16 points achieved in 35 days. Things started with enthusiasm and 5 minutes into the game, Ahmedhodzic’s centimeters put Sheffield ahead in approach and there were some promising counterattacks that could have meant the same.
Later, the visiting team regretted the missed opportunities. Newcastle, more solid than the day before, began their comeback under the boots of Isak, who never tired of scoring goals. He receives Murphy’s space and crosses to Foderingham (26′). However, Sheffield again had two very clear goals from Brereton and Brooks, who scored a goal.
That was the last thing he did in the attack. Their goalkeeper was superb with Hall to prevent a goal that would have condemned them to relegation, but there was still a whole second half to go. It started in the worst way possible. Bruno, in his approach, scored the second by finishing with a flat finish (54′) and then a few minutes later Holgate conceded a silly penalty on Gordon so Isak was sentenced from the eleven -one meter (58′).
To add insult to injury, and exemplify what this season has been like for Sheffield United, Newcastle’s fourth goal was Osborn’s own in a rather absurd game (65′). With their arms down, the bet was on how many more goals Newcastle would score. It was just one more, the work of Callum Wilson (72′), but because Foderingham had the self-respect to make a good save it was useless. Sheffield is a Championship team.
