The German Jan-Lennard Struff qualified for the round of 16 of the Madrid tournament after defeating Frenchman Ugo Humbert 7-5, 6-4 and thus added his sixth straight victory and the 50th of his career in the Masters 1,000.
Struff, finalist in the Caja Mágica in 2023, when he lost to Carlos Alcaraz, will face the Spaniard againalthough three rounds earlier, if he beats Brazilian Thiago Seyboth Wild in the afternoon session.
The German was once again comfortable on Madrid soil and had little trouble against Humbert, better ranked (14-24) but less effective in the clash. He didn’t even have a break ball against the German.
In Struff’s final year, Alcaraz became too uncomfortable to give him a setalthough in the end he gave 6-4, 3-6 and 6-3.
