1-0: Spain’s persistence earns them victory over Poland and passage to the semifinals

Date:

The Spanish under-17 women’s team made it to the semifinals of European Championshipa of the category after defeating Poland on the second day thanks to a goal from Ainoa Gómez in the last moments of the match (1-0).

After defeating Portugal on the first day in a more difficult match than the final result of 3-0 reflected, Spain faced the Polish team with a certain composure but knowing that victory would give them a pass to the penultimate round .

For this reason, and also because of the individual technical quality of its players, it was more ambitious at the start against an opponent that let it do its thing and sought to surprise the isolated actions of its two forwards. Indeed, Oliwia Zwizek had the first clear-cut chance of the match with a shot well saved by Laia.

That warning did not stop Kenio Gonzalo’s team from executing their game plan, based on patience and ball control. And in that context the strategies in the rival area ended up coming. Of all, the most dangerous was a shot from the front by Irune Dorado that worried the goalkeeper after Noa Ortega’s back pass.

Trying to change the match, the Spanish coach turned to Alba Cerrato at half-time. And as happened in the previous rivalry, the Sevilla attacker gave the team another march, creating danger with an attack on the left wing that ended with a shot by Ainhoa Gómez and the subsequent intervention of Julia Wozniak.

From that moment, the goalkeeper began to be important because he denied Ainhoaanother goal with a good stretch to deflect a header and previously acted to prevent what would have been a goal from Celia Segura.

On those occasions, the equalizer was granted but in the 87th minute a corner kick placed on the edge of the area was first headed by Natalia Escot and deflected into the net by the persistent Ainhoa
