Schauffele extended his lead at Wells Fargo, with McIlroy second

Date:

Xander Schauffele extended his lead to four strokes after day two of the Wells Fargo Championship after signing a -4 card this Friday.

The world number 4 started the day with a three-shot cushion and made five birdies to reach -11. Northern Irishman Rory McIlroy (68) and Australian Jason Day (67) share second place at -7.

Schauffele has won seven times on the PGA Tour, but he is aiming for his first title since July 2022.

Schauffele made his first four birdies in a six-hole stretch from holes 5 to 10 at the Quail Hollow Club. For his third shot on the par-5 10th, he chipped in from 90 feet away and rolled it just 3 feet past the hole.

The 30-year-old hit his tee shot on the par-3 13th hole to within 5 feet for his fifth birdie. He finished his round with his only bogey of the day after missing the 18th green in regulation and missing a 14-foot shot that could have saved par.

McIlroy made four bogeys on Thursday, but he put those problems behind him on Friday, with three birdies and 15 pars.

Day made five birdies and one bogey in a six-hole swing from holes 7-12 to move up the leaderboard. The 13-time PGA Tour winner is looking forward to a different challenge this weekend as the weather changes.

South Korea’s Taylor Moore and Sungjae Im shot 68s for the second straight day to move to 6 under par and into a tie for fourth place.

Collin Morikawa was 6 under par and was on the 18th fairway when the horn sounded to evacuate the course due to lightning strikes in the area. The delay was brief, but when he returned he put his next shot into a greenside bunker and made bogey for a second round of 70. At 5 under par, he was alone in sixth place.

The sixth scoring event of the season is worth $20 million and serves as the final tune-up for PGA Tour players before next week’s PGA Championship. No 36-hole cut.
