A Missouri man kills his wife because he can no longer afford treatment costs.
An elderly man from Missouri (USA) is to stand trial for murder. Ronnie Wiggs is accused of strangling his wife in a hospital bed. Motive: He could no longer afford their medical care.
Wiggs’ wife was admitted to Centerpoint Medical Center in the small town of Independence for a new dialysis port to be installed. According to local TV station FOX4, the woman went into cardiac arrest in the intensive care unit one night after the procedure, which caused an alarm.
Caught in action
When nurses rushed in, they saw the man choking his wife “with one hand around her neck while covering her mouth with the other,” according to court documents. The pensioner is said to have admitted his crime several times to hospital staff. His wife could no longer be saved; she was brain dead from lack of oxygen.
Two previous murder attempts
The 76-year-old suspect was arrested by the police without resistance. According to interrogation protocol, he allegedly confessed that he had tried unsuccessfully to kill his wife twice before in hospitals: “He stated that he was depressed because he could no longer afford his wife’s medical treatment. That’s why he preferred her dead.”
