The number of students is increasing: 97,000 “Taferlklassler” are going to school this year

Date:

In the east of Austria, the new school year starts on Monday, in the other federal states the holidays are over a week later. The start of school brings with it a bit more “Taferl-Klassler” and also a slight increase in the total number of students.

Statistics Austria estimates that around 97,000 primary school pupils will experience their first day of school. That is 1.9 percent more than last school year. Overall, the number of students is likely to increase by 0.9 percent to 1.15 million (see chart below).

In Vienna, Lower Austria and Burgenland, school will start on Monday for 502,000 children and young people, 42,500 primary school pupils in these three states will take their first class. On September 11, the 648,000 pupils in Carinthia, Upper Austria, Salzburg, Styria, Tyrol and Vorarlberg – including 54,500 pupils from the “Taferl” class – will also come to the end of the holiday or kindergarten years.

Minus expected in the BMHS
This time more and more pupils are expected at primary schools (plus 1.7 percent); Statistic Austria also expects an increase of slightly less or more than one percent in the other compulsory schools (secondary education, special education, polytechnic school). An increase of 1.4 percent is assumed in the AHS and 0.4 percent in vocational schools. Meanwhile, a drop of 0.5 percent is predicted for vocational schools and colleges.

Education Minister Martin Polaschek (ÖVP) once again emphasized in a statement that every lesson could take place in the coming school year. He would like to thank all teachers for this.
