The French Christophe Laporte, Victim of a heavy fall in the fifth stage of the Giro d’Italia, he did not start the eighth stage, his team announced on Saturday, Visma-Rent a bike.
“Christophe did not start because, unfortunately, he did not fully recover from his fall in the fifth stage,” the Dutch team explained in a statement.
“We decided together that he needs to rest,” added the squad.
Laporte, 31, suffered a heavy fall in the fifth stage on Wednesday, caught by a manhole cover on the road.
The Frenchman is the second rider from the Visma-Lease bike team to leave after the Dutchman Robert Gesinkwho suffered a fall in the first stage.
Laporte is not expected to take part in the 2024 Giro, but has remained in the sprinter’s thrower role. Olav Kooij.
The 2023 European champion has not survived failures since the beginning of the year: he faced Milan-San Remo poorly and was forced to withdraw, then had a stomach flu and an operation on his perineum that deprived him of Flanders classics.
