Rose Zhang made four birdies in her final five holes to move past Sweden’s Madelene Sagstrom and win her second LPGA title this Sunday at the Cognizant Founders Cup in Clifton, New Jersey.
Zhang, 20, shot -6 in his final round to reach -24, beating Sagstrom, who had a 69 on Sunday, by two strokes. Third was Australian Gabriela Ruffels (71) with -9.
Zhang’s win ended Nelly Korda’s personal streak of five tournament wins.. The No. 1 was trying to become the first player in LPGA history to win six consecutive titles, but she shot 73 for the second consecutive day and tied for seventh place at 7 under par.
Sagstrom started the day with a one-stroke lead and recovered from an early bogey by birdying four of his next seven holes. Zhang was only 2 under par through the first nine holes, and when Sagstrom added a birdie on the 12th hole to Zhang’s par, the Swede went up by three.
But Sagstrom never birdied again and played his final six holes at 1 over par. Zhang recovered by making a 4 on the par-5 14th, then hit his tee shot on the par-3 15th just yards from the flag for another birdie.
After Sagstrom bogeyed the 16th and tied for the lead, Zhang took advantage and finished birdie-birdie.
Sagstrom, world number 62, was also looking for the second victory of her LPGA career on Sunday.
Her streak of five tournament wins matches that of Nancy López and Annika Sorenstam as the longest in LPGA history.
