The Extremaduran Javier Cienfuegos, national hammer record holder, announced this evening in Andújar (Jaén) his retirement as an athlete because he has not overcome the back injury, “so it is time to step aside and leave it,” although he does not rule out if he improves his pain “to go back, but on another less demanding level, even now I have to stop regretting so much”.
The athlete from Montijo, the municipality where he is the current mayor, publicly announced his retirement during a tribute held at the Jaén Paraíso Interior-Memorial Francisco Ramón Higueras Rally, where in September 2019 he broke the Spanish hammer record with a throw of 79.38 meters.
Cienfuegos, excited, told the official media of Royal Spanish Athletics Federation (RFEA): “Remembering the moment of breaking the Spanish record in Andújar is very exciting, but the race is over and I can’t give back to athletics all that it gave me,” he said.
Also, Cienfuegos is grateful for the recognition of Andújar and taught. “It is very exciting and I am very grateful to you for this gesture in an important event for Spanish and European athletics,” he said.
He was the champion of Spain in 2009-2010-2012-2013-2014-2015-2016-2018-2019-2020-2021-2022 and long throw champion in (2011-2012-2013-2014-2015-2014-2015 2019 -2020-2021-2022-2023.
