Jean-Louis Gasset, coach of Olympique de Marseille, will sit on the bench for the last time on Sunday before ending his career at the age of 70. This was announced today, Friday, by the French coach himself on the eve of the last round of Ligue 1 against Le Havre.
“That I stay in football, that my experience, my ideas and my networks are taken advantage of is a possibility. I don’t know how to plant a garden, I have nothing to do. But as a coach, it’s over,” announced Gasset, who was appointed in February as interim then Gennaro Gattuso was dismissed.
From the Africa Cup to Marseille
Gassset arrived in Marseille a month after he was relieved as head of the Ivory Coast national team after the poor results achieved in the group stage of the African Cup as the host of the tournament. His assistant Emerse Faé revealed to him and ended up winning the title.
Marseille is eighth and has a remote chance of qualifying for Europe. With three points less than Lens and Lyon, they must win their visit to Le Havre and hope that their direct rivals lose against Montpellier and Strasbourg.
Apart from the Ivory Coast, Gasset has only managed French teams: Montpellier (1998-1999), Caen 82000-2001), Istres (2005-2006), Montpellier (2017), Saint-Étienne (2017-2019) and Bordeaux (2020) -2021).
