A few hours ago the worst news for Sam Kerr: you will lose the Olympic Games this summer in Paris. Australia has announced that its striker and captain, who is recovering from a serious knee injury sustained in January during an international training camp, will not recover in time and will miss the event.
The 30-year-old Chelsea forward suffered an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury and his participation is now very much in doubt. Football Australia (FA) has ended speculation by announcing the squad for Australia’s two home games against China in Adelaide on May 31.
“Forwards Amy Sayer and Sam Kerr, both with cruciate knee ligament injuries, remain on the sidelines with long-term injuries,” the FA said. “Kerr and Sayer will continue their rehabilitation programs in their club environments and will then be unavailable for selection for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.”
Australia coach Tony Gustavsson said the 23-player list was a solid guide to his final Olympic line-up but could consider last-minute omissions of some players, such as injured midfielders Katrina Gorry and Aivi Luik.
Australia will be looking for their first Olympic medal in Paris after reaching the semi-finals of the Women’s World Cup on home soil last year.
